MUCRAKERS EPISODE TWO: STUDENT SAFETY

WMUC's MUCRAKERS was the first to break the news about an arrest in connection with an off-campus violent rape of a University of Maryland student.

On March 9, 2009, the Prince George's County Police arrested and charged a Mr. Derik E. Villeda-Morales, a 23 year old male from Laurel, MD, in connection with the rape of a University student that occurred on February 21, 2009.

That incident was the subject of discussion for the second episode of MUCRAKERS.

College Park Police Spokesperson joined us to talk about the arrest. Allison Bennett, a coordinator for the Sexual Assault Response and Prevention Program (SARPP) in the University of Maryland Health Center was also in studio, as was Student Government President Jonathan Sachs. We talked rape, crime statistics, overall student safety, and twitter.

MUCRAKERS EPISODE ONE: THE FINANCIAL CRISIS

On February 2nd - MUCRAKERS investigated the Financial Crisis hitting the University of Maryland College Park campus. We talked to SGA President Jonathan Sachs, UMD College Park's VP of Administrative Affairs, Maryland State Senator Jim Rosapepe, and Diamondback reporter Allison Stice. We also played a special report by Terp Weekly Edition - the College of Journalism's weekly radio program, featuring contributors Brooks Staley, Amanda Gaines and Kyle Cox.

For this first edition, we took a look at the furlough days and the tuition freeze and how it's affecting the students. We also talked about Governor Martin O'Malley's recent State of the State Address. Students and the middle class families that attend the University of Maryland are struggling to pay the college tuition bills, and to help alleviate this, Governor O'Malley has instituted a tuition freeze for a fourth straight year. Some say a tuition hike will help pump some extra cash into the Maryland government and save jobs. The Governor is also having UMD President Dan Mote institute furlough days - which most agreed was better than having to lay off employees.

How will off this affect the student at Maryland? MUCRAKERS investigates.

(a special note: during the first few minutes of this program, I accidentally and unknowingly played a song during the introduction and beginning of the show. My sincere apologies for this early road bump - I recommend skipping ahead a bit.)

the Financial Crisis

Our first show is going to be this MONDAY the 2nd of February, and we'll be tackling the impacts of a struggling economy on the University of Maryland. We'll be focusing on the tuition freeze and the furlough days instituted by Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley.

We expect a representative from the SGA, a state representative, and a university representative to join us to discuss and debate the issues. We'll also have a Diamondback reporter on board to talk about what's been said and to help analyze the situation.

Hope you can join us!
